Over the years I’ve known many parents who felt preschool wasn’t important for their child because their child already knew his or her letters, numbers, shapes and colors. Well folks, it isn’t just about reading, writing and ‘rithmetic. Developing strong social skills at a young age has a hugely positive impact on a person’s adult life.
In her article Study: Behavior in Kindergarten Linked to Adult Success CNN’s Kelly Wallace writes, “Children who were helpful and shared in kindergarten were more likely to have graduated college and have a full-time job at age 25. The children who had problems resolving conflicts, sharing, cooperating and listening as kindergartners were less likely to have finished high school and college, and were more likely to have substance abuse problems and run-ins with the law.”
Much of life “happens” outside of the confines of our homes. Most of us don’t work and play in a bubble. We work and play with other humans. The only way to learn how to get along with other humans is to actually socialize with people outside of our immediate families. What better place to start that socialization process than a high-quality preschool?
